What is a Mount?

A picture mount (also known as a mat or matting) is a piece of cardboard, paper, or other material that is used to frame a picture or artwork.

It is typically placed between the picture and the frame, creating a border or a gap between the picture and the frame.

Picture mounts are available in various colours, textures, and thicknesses. They have many uses:

  • they can be used to enhance the appearance of a picture, with complimentary colours
  • they can provide protection for the artwork, a mount will stop the perspex/glass touching your image directly. This is important for Limited editions, original artwork, pastels and more.
  • they can also create a visual barrier between the picture and the surrounding space.

The size of the picture mount is typically chosen to be slightly larger than the picture itself, providing a border around the image and helping to draw the viewer's eye to the artwork.

All of our Mounts are acid free, with a machine-cut bevelled edge.
